Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The tragic events of Easter Sunday at the Audubon Apartments in Daphne have left the community reeling, with one person dead and another seriously wounded in a shooting incident. The alleged perpetrator, 24-year-old Kaynen Gurley, appeared in court on Thursday, where shocking revelations shed new light on the events leading up to and following the shooting.

Prosecution vs. Defense

Described as a career criminal by prosecutors, Kaynen Gurley’s attorney maintains that his client acted in self-defense. Following a preliminary hearing on charges of murder and attempted murder, Gurley remained defiant, facing the most serious legal consequences of his troubled past.

A History of Trouble

Assistant District Attorney Patrick Doggett highlighted Gurley’s criminal record, citing multiple felonies that have seen him in and out of jail over the past five years. Shockingly, Gurley had only been out of jail for 11 days before the fateful events unfolded on Easter Sunday.

The Tragic Incident

On Easter Sunday, police responded to the Audubon Apartment complex, where they found one man, identified as Matt Bonnell, dead from gunshot wounds and another man seriously injured. The shooting occurred during a gun deal gone wrong, with Gurley identified as the primary suspect.

A Fatal Encounter

Lt. Jason Lazzari of the Daphne Police Department testified that Gurley, Bonnell, and Bonnell’s girlfriend had arrived at the apartment in the early hours of the morning to inspect a collection of firearms. Tragically, within minutes of their arrival, gunfire erupted, leaving Bonnell dead and Gurley and Bonnell’s girlfriend fleeing the scene.

Self-Defense or Premeditated Act?

Gurley’s defence attorney, Trey Canida, revealed that his client had claimed self-defence in the incident. According to Gurley’s account, he believed Bonnell posed a threat, having just been involved in a physical altercation with his girlfriend. As the trio headed towards Mobile County, the firearm used in the shooting was discarded on the Bayway.

The Aftermath

Following the incident, Bonnell’s girlfriend was dropped off in Axis and has been cooperating with the authorities in their investigation. Gurley, on the other hand, was apprehended three days after the murder in Washington County and has since been held in Baldwin County Jail on a $500,000 bond.

Legal Proceedings and Future Outlook

With the conclusion of the preliminary hearing, the case will now proceed to a Baldwin County Grand Jury. Prosecutors remain resolute in their pursuit of justice, hoping to ensure that Gurley does not pose a threat to the community in the future.

Despite the tragic loss of life and the devastating impact on all involved, the legal process will continue to unfold as the community seeks closure and justice for the victims of this senseless act of violence.
