SALINE COUNTY — A woman from Kansas is facing a slew of requested charges following a high-speed chase that took place in Saline County.

Shortly after 3:30 a.m. on Thursday, a sheriff’s deputy tried to pull over a 2020 Ford Explorer for allegedly speeding at 70mph on Hohneck Road in a 55mph zone, as reported by Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan.

As the deputy attempted to initiate the stop, the Explorer turned onto Hohneck Road and accelerated northwards.

Due to the dust kicked up by the speeding vehicle, the deputy momentarily lost sight of it but eventually found where the Explorer had veered off the road, collided with a tree, and then traversed through a large ditch. “The deputy suspected that the vehicle had rolled over, so he inspected the area and discovered a trail of fluid leading back to the road,” Soldan explained.

Following the fluid trail, deputies tracked the vehicle back onto Hohneck Road heading north. The pursuit continued west on State Street, where law enforcement caught up with the vehicle, still leaking fluid.

Despite sustaining damage to the Explorer and losing its right rear tire, the driver continued to evade the authorities, leading them on a chase northwards on Lincoln Road, then over to Watkins, before heading north on Reese Road. The pursuit finally came to an end after the damaged tire was completely shredded.

The driver, identified as 31-year-old Kayla Erebo from Lorraine, was arrested on requested charges including fleeing and eluding law enforcement, driving under the influence (DUI), and leaving the scene of an accident. Additional traffic violations are expected to be added to the official report.

Soldan revealed that the highest speed reached during the chase was approximately 80 mph. Erebo sustained minor injuries and was taken to Salina Regional Health Center before being booked into jail.
