The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office in Portland, Oregon is currently investigating the tragic death of a 24-year-old woman, Kaileigh Seidel, who was reportedly struck by a boat while recreating on the Willamette River over the weekend.
Initially, the sheriff’s office provided a misleading account of the incident, stating that Seidel had fallen off a boat and was hit by another passing boat. However, they have since corrected this information, clarifying that she was actually struck while riding an inflatable tube being towed by another boat.
Emergency services, including Portland Fire and Rescue and American Medical Response, responded to the scene near the Hawthorne Bridge just before 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 22. The initial report indicated that a person riding an inflatable tube towed by a boat had collided with another vessel on the river.
Seidel was swiftly transported by one of the involved boats to the southern dock at Riverplace Marina, where first responders met her and rushed her to the hospital. Tragically, she was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival at the medical facility.
The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office and the River Patrol Unit also arrived at the dock around 8:05 p.m. to gather information and begin an investigation into the incident.
Following Seidel’s death, the sheriff’s office launched a formal death investigation. The case will be referred to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office for a decision on whether any criminal charges will be filed in connection with the incident.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Seidel’s death is still ongoing, and authorities are continuing their efforts to gather more information and evidence.
