During the initial presidential debate of 2024, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump engaged in a heated discussion over their immigration and border security policies.
Biden criticised Trump for his policy of separating migrant families at the U.S.-Mexico border, while Trump defended his administration’s record by stating that they had the “safest border in history” during his tenure.
The Biden administration had rolled back some of Trump’s measures aimed at deterring migrants from entering the country, legally or otherwise.
Despite these efforts, a recent poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research revealed that only 3 in 10 U.S. adults approve of Biden’s immigration approach.
Biden’s Claims at the Debate
In an attempt to bolster his stance on immigration, Biden asserted during the debate that the Border Patrol had endorsed him and his immigration policies.
However, it was later clarified that the Border Patrol did not endorse Biden. Instead, a union representing Border Patrol agents endorsed a bipartisan Senate proposal negotiated by the White House with Republicans.
The National Border Patrol Union reiterated their position in a brief statement on X, formerly Twitter, stating, “To be clear, we never have and never will endorse Biden.”
Trump’s Stance on Immigration
During the debate, Trump emphasised a link between immigration and crime, a common theme among Republicans in the lead-up to the election. He made generalised assertions about immigration based on isolated criminal incidents.
While there have been recent high-profile crimes allegedly committed by individuals in the country illegally, FBI statistics do not differentiate crimes based on the immigration status of the perpetrator. Moreover, there is no evidence of a significant increase in crime committed by migrants, whether at the U.S.-Mexico border or in major migrant-receiving cities like New York.
Studies have shown that individuals living in the country illegally are less likely to be arrested for violent, drug, and property crimes compared to native-born Americans.
National Priority on Immigration
Immigration has emerged as a top national priority, not just among Republicans. A recent Nexstar survey of 1,109 undecided voters revealed that 24% considered immigration and border security the second most important issue leading up to the election.
The Nexstar survey, conducted through Nexstar Media Group websites, gathered responses from over 9,000 participants from June 24 to June 25. While not scientifically representative, it provides insights into viewer sentiments.
