Accident – Death – Obituary News :

After decades of being known as “Jane Doe”, a young woman who was found shot to death outside Seneca in 1976 has finally been identified as JoAnn “Vickie” Smith. The 20-year-old black female went missing from her home in Cincinnati before her body was discovered by a farmer and his granddaughter alongside Route 6 near Seneca.

Smith’s case remained unsolved for years until the Grundy County Coroner’s Office reopened it in late 2017. With the help of modern forensic science techniques and technology, efforts to obtain DNA from her remains were successful, leading to her identification.

Investigators believe that Smith was adopted and her name was changed multiple times, making the identification process more challenging. Her remains will now be laid to rest with her late parents in South Carolina, bringing closure to her family.

It is suspected that Smith was killed in a different location before being left near Seneca, adding a layer of mystery to the case. Despite the passage of time, the efforts of law enforcement and forensic experts have finally brought some answers in this long-standing cold case.
