LaGrange County, Ind. – The LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department responded to a devastating two-vehicle crash near 5410 South S.R. 5 in Topeka on Thursday, June 27, at 5:28 a.m. The incident has left the local community in shock and mourning.
Details of the Crash
According to the report, a 2012 Dodge Caravan, driven by 74-year-old James Goodwin of Syracuse, was travelling south on S.R. 5 when it is believed that Goodwin fell asleep at the wheel and crossed the centre line into the northbound lane.
On the other side of the road, a 2002 Pontiac Montana, driven by 61-year-old Martin Macias Rodriguez of Ligonier, was approaching. Rodriguez attempted to avoid the collision, but unfortunately, Goodwin’s Caravan struck the Pontiac on the right side of the front-end.
Injuries and Fatalities
Rafael Beccerra, a 58-year-old passenger in the Pontiac, suffered multiple injuries in the crash and was rushed to Parkview LaGrange Hospital for treatment. Beccerra was seated in the right rear seat at the time of the collision.
Tragically, another passenger in the Pontiac, identified as 53-year-old Abel Dominguez Salazar, was in the right front passenger seat and became trapped in the vehicle. The Topeka Fire Department had to extract Salazar from the wreckage.
Despite efforts to save his life, Salazar was unresponsive at the scene and was pronounced dead by authorities. The loss of Salazar has deeply affected his loved ones and the entire community.
Investigation Ongoing
The Indiana State Police conducted a full crash reconstruction to determine the circumstances that led to this tragic incident. The investigation into the crash is still ongoing, as authorities work to piece together what happened and why.
