Accident – Death – Obituary News :

BALTIMORE — The family of a promising talent in the boxing world gathered for a vigil on Thursday evening to honour the life of the 27-year-old and advocate for stricter gun control laws.

Isaiah Olugbemi, hailing from Odenton, tragically lost his life after being fatally shot multiple times on June 17 near Meadowmist Way and Stehlik Drive, as reported by the Anne Arundel County Police Department.

Charged with first and second-degree murder in connection to the incident is Nicholas Giroux, aged 36.

According to court documents, detectives reviewed video surveillance footage which depicted Giroux, a white male, approaching Olugbemi with a handgun, firing multiple shots, and fleeing the scene on foot.

During an interview with Giroux on June 18, he reportedly confessed to the murder, as stated by the police.

Family members disclosed that Giroux, the alleged perpetrator, was Olugbemi’s neighbour who had previously threatened the victim with a firearm on numerous occasions prior to the fatal shooting.

“We do not want this in our community ever again,” expressed Adewale Oparinde, a cousin-in-law. “We should all feel secure residing in our neighbourhood without the dread of someone brandishing a gun at us.”

Olugbemi, a father to a 2-year-old boy, was an emerging amateur boxer who had recently clinched a National Golden Gloves title.

The vigil, conducted at GORC Park, aimed to commemorate his legacy, urge authorities to expedite the investigation, and push for the enforcement of stricter gun control measures.

A petition was initiated on Tuesday to demand justice in this case.

“As a family, we are devastated, sorrowful, and we earnestly seek justice for the individual who committed this heinous act against our family,” expressed cousin Tolu Oparinde.

With over 2,100 signatures garnered thus far, the petition’s objective is to reach 2,500 signatures.

Family members have announced that a private funeral service for Olugbemi will be conducted on Friday.

Giroux, presently incarcerated without bond, is scheduled to appear in court on July 17 for a preliminary hearing.
