The Minbij Military Council has reported a tragic incident in which a civilian lost their life and another sustained injuries due to a bombardment carried out by the Turkish occupation forces on the village of Al Derec. The victim has been identified as 45-year-old Ibrahim Derc Semo, while a 26-year-old young man named Xalid Kamil Al Hilal is currently receiving treatment at Manbij Hospital.

Situated 30 kilometres south of the Turkish border, Manbij holds a crucial strategic position in Turkey’s ambitions to expand its illegal occupation zone in Syria. Administered by the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES), the city lies on the vital M4 highway that serves as a lifeline for northern Syria. This route was previously used as a strategic supply line by the terrorist group known as the “Islamic State” (IS).

Following Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s declaration of Manbij as a primary target for a new invasion of northern and eastern Syria in 2022, the city has faced escalating threats. The Turkish army and allied jihadist militias have been launching attacks, while infiltration attempts have become a common occurrence. Additionally, incidents of farmland and forest fires in Manbij have been reported on a daily basis since the beginning of the season.
