Stranger Attempts to Rape Woman in Waukegan, Neighbours Come to her Rescue

A distressing incident unfolded in Waukegan on Tuesday evening when a woman was targeted by a stranger outside her home, prompting a swift response from vigilant neighbours.

The Waukegan Police Department was alerted to an unknown problem on the 1000 block of North Sheridan Road around 10 p.m. Multiple frantic 911 calls reported a woman’s screams emanating from the vicinity.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Elizabeth Cannon revealed that concerned neighbours rushed to the scene and discovered the woman rising from the ground, nursing abrasions on her elbow.

According to Cannon, the woman had been inside her residence with the patio door ajar and the screen door shut. Alarmed by noises outside, she secured the screen door and locked the patio door for safety.

Upon returning downstairs, the woman was startled to find the screen door open. As she moved to close it, a male assailant seized her, causing her to fall to the ground.

The perpetrator, identified as 22-year-old Henry M. Yates, pinned the woman down and covered her mouth, attempting to remove her clothing while instructing her to remain silent.

When the victim questioned Yates’ motives, he brazenly declared his intention for sexual activity. In a bid to attract attention, the woman began screaming, prompting neighbours to intervene. Yates fled the scene before law enforcement arrived.

Identifying Yates as the suspect, the victim disclosed that he had previously trespassed into her garage in a separate incident. Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain confirmed that the victim is a 66-year-old woman.

Yates faces charges of attempted criminal sexual assault, unlawful restraint, aggravated battery, and resisting a peace officer. Lake County Judge Raymond Collins ordered his detention pending a hearing scheduled for Tuesday.

During an initial court appearance on Friday, a public defender raised concerns over Yates’ mental fitness to stand trial.
