Accident – Death – Obituary News : A devastated mother has recounted to authorities the harrowing account of how a migrant brutally choked her teenage daughter to death as their overcrowded boat began to sink in the treacherous waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
According to official investigative reports obtained by MailOnline, the suspect in question has been identified as 27-year-old Iranian national, Haukar Ahmadi. The victim, 16-year-old Ghater Maylan, fell prey to Ahmadi’s violent attack as their vessel started taking on water during the perilous journey.
In her statement to the police, the grieving mother, Mojda Omar, 41, tearfully recalled the traumatic moment when Ahmadi mercilessly pinned her daughter down, suffocating her with his knees, despite her desperate pleas for him to stop.
The tragic incident unfolded earlier this week as the boat, carrying approximately 70 migrants, succumbed to the waves off the southern coast of Italy after departing from the Turkish port of Bodrum.
Authorities have clarified that contrary to earlier reports in the Italian media, including by respected news agency AGI, the mother did not mention any allegations of sexual assault against her daughter. This discrepancy has been attributed to translation errors.
Chief investigator, Gianfranco Minissale, affirmed that the primary focus of the inquiry remains on the charge of murder against Ahmadi, who is currently in custody pending further investigations. The body of the young girl has yet to be recovered.
Reports suggest that Ahmadi, who tragically lost his own wife and daughter in the boat tragedy, unleashed his rage on Ghater after witnessing his family members perish in the sinking vessel. Italian coastguards managed to rescue only a dozen survivors from the disaster, including Ahmadi and Mojda.
As the search for the remaining victims continues, with several children among the casualties, Ahmadi remains detained at Catanzaro prison while Mojda receives medical care at a local hospital.
In her emotionally charged statement, Mojda detailed the heartbreaking moment when her daughter fell silent after being attacked by Ahmadi, as her son helplessly watched on. The distraught mother described the chaotic scene on the boat, with bodies strewn around, as Ahmadi callously trampled over the deceased to reach Ghater.
Recounting the unsettling behaviour of the assailant during the journey, Mojda revealed Ahmadi’s disturbing actions, including his demands for her daughter to undress and his refusal to assist in moving the body of her deceased husband.
Legal representation for Ahmadi, Antonio Cavo, has indicated that his client has not yet granted permission to engage with the media, expressing readiness to provide further insights once a consultation has been conducted.
