In a heartbreaking turn of events, a four-day search for a man who fell from a jet ski at Rollins Reservoir in Nevada City, California, has come to a tragic end. The 49-year-old man, identified as Hashim Raza Rizvi from Davis, California, was located on the evening of June 27 using remote operated symbiotic robots and was recovered from a depth of approximately 170 feet.

“The depth at which he was located was far too dangerous for any of our respective dive teams to safely retrieve him,” explained Incident Commander, Lt. Russell Greene of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office. “We and our partners are fortunate to have access to a variety of advanced technology, such as remote operated symbiotic robots, that made the recovery possible in a safe and efficient manner.”

Advanced Technology Utilized in the Search Operation

Technology played a crucial role in aiding the search efforts, with the use of sonar, remote operated symbiotic robots, and lidar scanning technology to locate and recover the missing man.

The incident unfolded on Monday, June 24, with 911 calls reporting the incident to both Nevada County and Placer County’s regional dispatch centers at 11:39 a.m. Rollins Reservoir falls within the jurisdictions of both counties. Rizvi was operating a jet ski with two female riders when all three were thrown into the water during a turn. While the females resurfaced in distress and were rescued by a paddleboarder, Rizvi tragically did not resurface.

Initial reports indicated that Rizvi was not wearing a personal floatation device and could not swim, but his family later confirmed that he was indeed a proficient swimmer.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of life, but we are grateful that our teams were able to recover him and provide closure to his family,” added Lt. Greene.

Partnerships in Recovery Efforts

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office led the search operation, working closely with allied agencies to recover Rizvi. The following agencies contributed their teams, technology, and time to assist in the recovery efforts: Placer County Sheriff’s Office dive team, Yuba County Sheriff’s Office marine unit, Butte County Sheriff’s Office marine unit, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office dive team, California Highway Patrol Air Operations, Nevada County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue volunteers and cadaver dogs, PG&E, California Rescue Dog Association, and WOOF Search Dog Teams.
