A Franklin County man, identified as 56-year-old Gerald Don Miller, has been arrested for allegedly impersonating a Child Protective Services worker in Sulphur Springs and Lamar County, Texas.

Incidents in Sulphur Springs and Lamar County

On June 18, 2024, the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a white male posing as a CPS worker to gain access to a child. The suspect, Gerald Don Miller, reportedly told a guardian that he needed to speak with her child and was able to gain access. Detailed descriptions of the suspect and his vehicle were provided by the guardians and the victim.

Further investigation revealed a similar incident had occurred in Sulphur Springs, Texas, in November 2023, with matching suspect and vehicle descriptions. Detectives identified Miller on June 25, 2024, and obtained an arrest warrant. He was taken into custody at his residence in Franklin County.

Evidence and Targeted Victims

Property recovered from Miller’s vehicle corroborated the victim’s description in Lamar County, and additional evidence linked him to the Sulphur Springs offense. It was found that Miller targeted victims in the custody of grandparents and did not present accredited credentials.

Collaborative Efforts and Warning

The Lamar County Sheriff’s Office commended the collaborative efforts of detectives, CPS, the Sulphur Springs Police Department, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, and the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office. Law enforcement and CPS remind communities that CPS workers will always carry and show accredited credentials before speaking with individuals.

Descriptions and Ongoing Investigation

Authorities urge anyone who has had contact with Miller, where he claimed to be with CPS without showing credentials, to contact their local law enforcement agency. Miller is described as 5’8″ tall, approximately 240 pounds, with brown and white hair, a white mustache, and possibly carrying a red case with a Texas Department of Criminal Justice logo. The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
