Franklin Gongar : “Man sentenced to 50 years for raping 12-year-old”

Gbarpolu County—A 44-year-old man named Franklin Gongar has been sentenced by the Judge of the Sixth Judicial Circuit Court in Gbarpolu County for the rape of a 12-year-old girl in Gbarnga Gborketa Town, located in Bokomo District, Gbarpolu County. The incident took place on November 1, 2023.

On June 25, Judge Alphonsus Wesseh delivered the sentencing following a unanimous guilty verdict from the 15-man trial jury against Franklin Gongar. Judge Wesseh emphasized that the evidence presented by the prosecutor during the trial overwhelmingly supported the jury’s decision.

During the trial, the victim, whose identity has been withheld, testified that she was tasked by the defendant to purchase alcohol from a local vendor. Upon returning to deliver the alcohol, Gongar allegedly pushed her into his room, sexually assaulted her, and threatened her not to disclose the incident.

The victim, upon reaching home and experiencing bleeding, confided in her aunt, leading to the arrest of Franklin Gongar by the Liberia National Police. Subsequently, Gongar was charged with rape and brought before the court for trial.

Judge Wesseh highlighted the consistency in the victim’s testimony with the statements provided by other witnesses, including her grandmother and the Town Chief. This alignment in accounts strengthened the case against the defendant, ultimately leading to his conviction.
