WEST MILFORD – A heartbreaking incident unfolded at the Clinton Reservoir, located within the Newark Watershed Property, as a missing swimmer’s body was recovered on Wednesday. The news was shared through a post on the Facebook page of Mayor Michele Dale.
The young victim has been identified as 18-year-old Eshan Aman Ullah from Randolph, according to the news release shared by the Mayor.
Authorities were alerted about the teen’s disappearance on Tuesday evening, just before 7 p.m., sparking a search and rescue operation.
Reports indicate that the teenager was at the reservoir with a group of friends when he went missing while swimming towards a small island. Preliminary investigations mentioned in the post revealed that warning signs are in place at the property to deter visitors from swimming in the water.
West Milford Police, along with their dive team, were not alone in the search efforts. The Passaic County Sheriff’s Department Scuba Unit and the New Jersey State Police TEAMS, Marine, and Aviation Units all collaborated to assist in the rescue and recovery operations, as stated in the news release.
Beware of Reservoir Dangers
Although reservoirs may resemble lakes from the surface, they serve different purposes which can pose risks to swimmers. According to a report by BBC Newsround, reservoirs, often artificial in nature, are used for purposes like hydroelectricity and flood control. These bodies of water may have steep sides and hidden hazards such as underwater pumps that create moving currents beneath the surface.
Before venturing into any open water, it is crucial to research its history and observe any posted signs that may restrict access to the area.
