On Tuesday, June 25, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was called upon to look into an officer-involved shooting that occurred involving the Otero County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO).
As per a statement from NMSP, the incident took place around 10:45 p.m. when an OCSO deputy was dispatched to perform a welfare check on a 17-year-old male, Elijah Hadley, who was walking in the median on U.S. Highway 70 near mile marker 240, situated between Tularosa and Mescalero.
Upon locating Hadley, the deputy approached him, at which point Hadley allegedly brandished what seemed to be a firearm. In response, the deputy discharged at least one round from his service weapon, which struck Hadley.
Subsequent investigations revealed that the object presented by Hadley was, in fact, an airsoft gun. Unfortunately, Hadley was pronounced dead at the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator. The deputy, however, emerged unscathed from the incident.
The identity of the OCSO deputy involved in the shooting will not be disclosed by the New Mexico State Police. For details regarding his duty status or any administrative measures taken, enquiries should be directed to the Otero County Sheriff’s Office.
New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau agents are diligently working to establish a clear timeline of events leading up to the shooting. This includes gathering evidence and conducting interviews. As the investigation progresses, any findings will be shared with the district attorney for review.
It is important to note that the New Mexico State Police’s role in officer-involved shootings is solely that of a fact-finder.
