Man found dead inside burning home in Fox Lake discovered hanging, coroner says.

A tragic incident unfolded in Fox Lake on Thursday morning as a 56-year-old man was pronounced dead after being rescued from a house fire. The Lake County Coroner revealed that the victim, identified as David Grenell, was found hanging in the basement of the residence by firefighters.
Emergency Response
The Fox Lake Fire Protection District and Fox Lake Police Department swiftly responded to a call reporting a structure fire in the 200 block of Lippincott Lane. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke emanating from the roof of the single-story house.
Despite the challenging conditions, firefighters conducted a thorough search of the property and located the victim in the basement. Tragically, despite their efforts, Grenell was pronounced dead at the scene.
Coroner’s Findings
Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek confirmed that an autopsy revealed Grenell’s cause of death as asphyxia due to hanging. The coroner stated that based on the scene investigation, the incident appeared to be self-inflicted.
Fire Investigation
Fire investigators were summoned to the scene to determine the cause of the blaze. Fox Lake Police Chief Dawn DeServi refrained from speculating on the nature of the fire and emphasized that there was no threat to the community, labeling the tragedy as “completely isolated.”
Property Damage
The fire resulted in significant damage to the residence, rendering it uninhabitable. Estimates put the cost of the damage at over $200,000. Multiple area fire departments, including Spring Grove, Wauconda, Round Lake, Lake Villa, and Antioch, collaborated in extinguishing the blaze.
As investigations continue into the tragic incident, the community mourns the loss of a member in this devastating house fire.
