The Baxter County Sheriff’s Office recently made a grim discovery when a diver recovered a body from a vehicle that had run off the causeway inside Pigeon Creek Park and become submerged under the water.
The incident was reported to the sheriff’s office after a lady called 911 on Thursday, June 27, stating that her son had informed her that his car had gone off into the lake and he was in need of help.
Authorities were dispatched to the Pigeon Creek area of Norfork Lake on Highway 201 North to locate the silver Toyota passenger car that was reportedly involved in the incident.
Despite not being visible from the roadway, responders expanded their search to other access points on Lake Norfork and enlisted the help of a patrol boat from the sheriff’s office and park rangers from the U. S. Army Corp of Engineers.
After an extensive search of bridges and access points on Norfork Lake, as well as the Pigeon Creek area, a park ranger discovered vehicle parts or debris near the causeway inside Pigeon Creek Park that matched the description of the missing vehicle.
Confirming the vehicle’s location approximately ten feet under the water, a sheriff’s office diver was deployed to recover the body of the deceased man, later identified as 31-year-old Darren M. Martin of Gamaliel, Ark.
Thirteen sheriff’s deputies, USACE Park Rangers, volunteer firefighters, and rescue personnel all played a role in the search and recovery efforts, with the Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division now tasked with preparing the official report.
