Marine Recruiter Faces Trial for Alleged Attack on 11-Year-Old Girl in Michigan Home

A 24-year-old Marine recruiter is set to stand trial on charges of breaking into a home in Michigan, stabbing an 11-year-old girl, and threatening to “kill everyone inside.” Cpl. Ricardo Perez Castillo waived his right to a preliminary hearing, moving his case to the Kent County, Michigan, 17th Circuit Court for further proceedings.

The allegations against Castillo include assault with intent to murder, first-degree home invasion, assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct, and carrying a weapon with unlawful intent. Prosecutors claim that Castillo entered a residence in the River Bluffs community of Rockford, Michigan, in the early hours of June 15. He reportedly stripped down to his underwear and shirt, grabbed a knife from the kitchen, and attacked the young girl, who was a friend of one of the residents.

According to witness testimony and police investigation, Castillo ceased the assault when the girl and her friend raised the alarm. The homeowner then held Castillo at gunpoint until law enforcement arrived. The 11-year-old victim sustained injuries to her arm and shoulder and received medical treatment.

Kent County Sheriff’s deputies discovered Castillo in the girl’s bedroom with a bloodied knife beside him. The arrest report indicates that Castillo had entered the residence with the intention of harming the occupants. He allegedly confessed to planning to kill the entire family and engage in sexual acts with the young girl.

Prior to the incident, Castillo had encountered another homeowner in the area, displaying erratic behaviour and issuing a warning before leaving. He was subsequently apprehended and is currently detained on a $2 million bond.

District Judge Sara J. Smolenski described the case as “scary” and “horrific,” expressing sympathy for the victim’s family. Castillo, a native of Waterford, Michigan, served as a canvassing recruiter at the Marine’s Lansing recruiting station.

Marine Corps officials confirmed Castillo’s military background, noting his infantry primary military occupational specialty and previous service at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The incident, believed to be alcohol-related, is under investigation, with no prior criminal record found for Castillo in Michigan.

In response to the case, the Marine Corps issued a statement expressing condolences to the victim’s family and refraining from further comment during the ongoing legal proceedings.

Local authorities consider the attack to be a random act, with no apparent connection between Castillo and the victims. The trial is set to proceed in the Michigan court system as the community grapples with the shocking nature of the incident.
