A man has been taken into custody for allegedly trying to entice children outside a popular candy store in Birch Bay, located approximately 16 miles northwest of Bellingham, Washington.
The unsettling incident unfolded on the evening of June 24 at around 7:30 p.m. A concerned individual reported witnessing a man attempting to lure two young children into his vehicle near the C Shop candy store.
The individual, identified as 53-year-old Corey Cardwell from Bellingham, reportedly approached the children and engaged them in conversation, offering them sweets and toys in an apparent attempt to coax them into his vehicle.
Alarming the onlookers, Cardwell allegedly made a chilling statement to the children, asking them, “Do you guys never want to see your parents ever again?” He then proceeded to retrieve a frisbee from the trunk of his car, seemingly trying to draw the children closer to him.
Thankfully, the parent of the children, who was inside the store at the time, intervened and instructed Cardwell to leave the children alone. Undeterred, Cardwell then entered the store and sat beside three other juvenile girls.
According to reports, he proceeded to make unsettling remarks to the girls, asking them if they wanted money and implying that he had money in his car trunk. The situation escalated when the parent of the younger children spotted Cardwell’s actions and promptly dialed 911.
Upon realizing that law enforcement was being contacted, Cardwell hastily fled in his vehicle towards Birch Bay State Park, leaving a trail of concern and fear in his wake.
The following day, detectives from the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office located and apprehended Cardwell. Despite denying the allegations, he did show detectives the frisbees in his trunk. However, the parent and another witness positively identified Cardwell as the individual who had attempted to lure the children.
Subsequently, Cardwell was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Whatcom County Jail on five counts of luring.
