LAGRANGE, Ga. — Tragedy struck in Troup County on Wednesday as one man lost his life in a fatal shooting, leading to the arrest of another individual on murder charges.
At approximately 5 p.m., deputies from the Troup County Sheriff’s Office rushed to the scene of a shooting in the 3800 block of Hogansville Road. They discovered 51-year-old Clayton Barlett, who had succumbed to gunshot wounds. A woman was also present at the scene, attempting to provide aid to the victim.
Initial investigations revealed that the male suspect had fled the scene in a truck with a female companion. However, the vehicle returned to the crime scene shortly after, leading to the swift apprehension of the occupants by law enforcement.
Authorities determined that Timothy Dewayne Burns, 53, engaged in a verbal altercation with Bartlett in the carport area of the residence. Tragically, the dispute escalated, culminating in Burns shooting Bartlett in the torso with a shotgun. Subsequently, Burns and Cynthia Vayda, 56, left the scene but promptly returned.
Timothy Dewayne Burns has been formally charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Meanwhile, Cynthia Vayda is facing charges of false statements and writings, as well as tampering with evidence. The Troup County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
