NEWPORT, Tenn. (WVLT) – The Newport Police Department is appealing to the public for information following the discovery of a deceased 44-year-old man floating in the Pigeon River. Chief of Police Scott Lamb confirmed the tragic finding and stated that the investigation is currently underway.
The incident, which took place at 170 W. Main Street, prompted a swift response from the Cocke County Swift Water Rescue Team and Newport Rescue Squad. The body has been transferred to the Knox County Regional Forensic Center for further examination and identification. The victim has been identified as Billy Joe Jones.
