Accident – Death – Obituary News : Aurora Police Respond to Multiple Gunshot Reports in South Eagle Circle

On Thursday evening, the Aurora police department was alerted to several reports of gunshots near the intersection of Smoky Hill Road and Quincy Avenue. Upon arriving at the scene, officers were met with a series of violent incidents that left multiple individuals injured.

In the 4400 block of South Eagle Circle, a 50-year-old woman was found in her vehicle with gunshot wounds. She was quickly transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Just a block away, a 64-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man were also discovered with gunshot wounds while walking in the area. It became evident to the authorities that all the shootings were linked to the same perpetrator.

Aurora police spokesman Matthew Longshore revealed, “While officers were surveying the immediate area, they observed a vehicle that appeared to be damaged.” Subsequently, the suspect believed to have committed the shootings was located in a nearby apartment and was apprehended without incident. Multiple firearms were found within the apartment, leading to an investigation into the motive behind the attacks.

“We don’t believe that the suspect knew any of these people,” Longshore added.

The suspect has been identified as 34-year-old Austin Benson. Although the police have not disclosed a motive for the shootings, records indicate similarities to previous incidents involving an individual with the same name.

Court documents from 2018 reveal that a 29-year-old Austin Benson, sharing the same birthdate as the suspect in the Aurora shooting, was involved in similar incidents in El Paso and Douglas counties. In one incident, the individual fired upon vehicles and individuals along Rampart Range Road before being confronted by a retired police officer at Devil’s Head Campground in Douglas County.

The suspect faced charges including attempted first-degree murder and felony menacing, which were later dismissed due to mental incompetence. In 2019, the same individual was charged with assaulting hospital staff in Parker, violating bond conditions from the previous case.

As the investigation into the Thursday night shootings in Aurora continues, authorities have not confirmed whether the Austin Benson linked to the Douglas County incidents is the same individual involved in the recent attacks. Longshore concluded, “Hopefully we can try to figure out why this happened.”
