A tragic incident unfolded in Letchworth State Park as a suspect in a Rochester-area murder case died by suicide on Thursday. The park was closed to the public due to the intense manhunt that was underway.
According to a report by WKBW-TV of Buffalo, the Irondequoit Police Department confirmed that the homicide suspect was found deceased within the state park. The park had been reopened earlier in the day after being closed for the search operations.
The events leading up to the tragic discovery began early in the morning when officers responded to a distress call at a residence. A person at the scene reported a disturbing scene with “blood everywhere.”
Upon arrival, authorities found the lifeless body of 80-year-old Joseph Deponceau inside the home, with a gunshot wound to his chest. It was revealed that Deponceau’s girlfriend had made the emergency call.
The suspect was later identified as 24-year-old Andrew Vahey, the grandson of the victim who resided in close proximity to his grandfather. Reports indicated that one of Vahey’s roommates received alarming text messages from him confessing to the murder and expressing intentions of taking his own life.
A search ensued, leading to the discovery of Vahey’s car within Letchworth State Park. Subsequently, a significant perimeter was established, prompting the closure of the park to the public for several hours.
Authorities spotted Vahey within the park, reportedly armed with a long gun. Efforts were made to engage with him, but tragically, he chose to end his own life before any intervention could take place.
The Irondequoit Police Department released a statement, indicating that based on the evidence gathered at the scene, witness testimonies, electronic data, and consultations with the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office, the case was considered closed.
