Authorities have identified the suspect involved in the recent shooting incident at a Melbourne apartment complex. The man responsible has been named as William J Banks Jr., aged 47, a resident of Melbourne as confirmed by the Melbourne Police Department.
Upon receiving a 911 call regarding a “suspicious individual” at the Pentagon Apartments on Babcock Street and Strawbridge Avenue, police responded to the scene. It was revealed that the call was made by the alleged shooter himself, who threatened the authorities. Subsequently, a wellness check was conducted at the apartment.
According to Sgt. Ben Slover of the Melbourne Police Department, the suspect barricaded himself in an apartment unit and opened fire at the officers upon their arrival. Fortunately, no officers were injured during the incident. Melbourne Police Chief David Gillespie stated that the officers initially maintained a defensive stance and attempted to negotiate with the suspect to peacefully resolve the situation. However, the suspect emerged from the apartment and began shooting at the officers, prompting them to return fire.
Following the exchange of gunfire, the suspect was initially reported to be in custody. However, an update later indicated that the suspect had succumbed to his injuries and the threat had been neutralised. The motive behind the suspect’s actions remains unclear at this time.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with the officer-involved shooting portion being handled by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in accordance with standard protocol.
