Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Health authorities in San Diego have issued a renewed call for vaccination as the city grapples with a concerning rise in mpox cases for the third consecutive summer. The public health departments are urging residents, especially those most affected in previous years, to get vaccinated to protect themselves from the disease.

In a recent statement, the San Diego County public health department revealed that they had recorded seven new cases of mpox in May and June. While the number may seem small, it exceeds the typical rate of one to two cases per month. This announcement follows a similar report from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, which reported 10 new cases over the past two weeks, a rate higher than usual.

Officials in San Diego have yet to confirm whether the latest cases were locally acquired or related to travel outside the region. However, they did mention that four out of the seven new cases were among individuals who had not been vaccinated.

Effectiveness of JYNNEOS Vaccine

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the JYNNEOS vaccine has shown to be 75 percent effective with one dose and 88 percent effective with two doses. The vaccine not only reduces the risk of illness but also leads to less severe symptoms and a lower rate of hospitalization compared to the unvaccinated population.

Mpox is a contagious disease that spreads through close personal contact with infected individuals. The virus can be transmitted through various forms of intimate contact, including sex, hugging, kissing, and prolonged face-to-face interactions like talking or breathing.

Symptoms and Demographics

Initial symptoms of mpox include flu-like illness with fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, exhaustion, muscle aches, headache, sore throat, nasal congestion, or cough. A rash may also develop, starting out as pimples or blisters, which can be extremely painful.

While anyone can contract mpox, recent cases have been predominantly seen in men who have sex with men. San Diego County has reported a total of 544 cases since 2022, with a majority of cases linked to individuals identifying as gay, lesbian, or bisexual.

Despite not specifying any events, the health advisory in San Diego comes ahead of summer festivals and gatherings. Historically, spikes in mpox cases have been observed following Pride festivities and other large gatherings.
