A devastating incident occurred on Tuesday night as a 51-year-old woman lost her life in a fatal car crash that led to her vehicle plunging into a river north of Escondido, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The unfortunate event took place on Old Highway 395 near Circle R Drive in the Hidden Meadows area around 10 p.m. The driver, operating a Lincoln SUV in the southbound lane, inexplicably swerved off the road, as reported by CHP Officer Hunter Gerber.
Tragically, the vehicle descended 200 feet down a steep embankment, resulting in the woman being ejected from the wreckage. Both the woman and the vehicle were partially submerged in the river, as confirmed by Cal Fire Capt. Brent Pascua.
A passing motorcyclist witnessed the harrowing crash and promptly contacted emergency services by dialling 911. Despite the efforts of Cal Fire personnel who attempted a technical rescue, the woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Later, crews successfully retrieved the wreckage from the ravine.
The deceased driver has been identified as a resident of Pala, although her identity has been withheld pending notification of her family, as stated by CHP officials.
