Authorities have disclosed the findings of their inquiry into the tragic accident that took place last month on Skippack Pike in Whitemarsh Township. The collision claimed the lives of a pregnant woman and her unborn child, leading to the arrest of her partner on charges of homicide by vehicle.
Details of the Crash
The incident occurred at 5:56 p.m. on May 4 along the 100 block of Skippack Pike, close to the intersection with Butler Pike. It involved a 2000 Buick LeSabre and a 2009 Toyota Corolla. According to the investigation, the Buick, driven by 27-year-old Jabrial Terry of Philadelphia, was travelling eastbound at a speed of 50 miles per hour. The vehicle veered off the road, hit a concrete culvert, overcorrected, and crossed into the westbound lane, colliding head-on with the Toyota.
At the time of the crash, Terry was trapped inside the Buick but was rescued by a Good Samaritan. His girlfriend, 24-year-old Nya Janae Stokes, who was pregnant, was found unconscious in the front passenger seat. Despite efforts to save her, Stokes was pronounced dead at Abington Hospital at 6:49 p.m. Her baby was delivered via C-section but tragically passed away on May 9.
Cause of Death and Injuries
Autopsy reports revealed that Stokes died from multiple injuries, while her baby succumbed to complications from blunt impact injuries. Both deaths were classified as accidental. Terry and the Toyota driver sustained lower body injuries in the crash, with Terry also suffering a head wound. Neither Terry nor Stokes were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

Legal Proceedings and Arrest
In a statement to the police, Terry initially claimed that his girlfriend was driving and denied being behind the wheel. However, evidence, including witness testimonies and DNA analysis, pointed to Terry as the driver. Substances, including marijuana, oxycodone, Xanax, and naloxone, were discovered in Terry’s possession post-crash.
Terry was charged with homicide by vehicle, DUI-related offenses, and other charges following the crash. After being apprehended by the U.S. Marshals, he is currently in custody facing a range of charges, including possession of controlled substances and driving offenses.
A preliminary hearing for Terry has been scheduled for July 10, and he is being held on $99,000 cash bail.
