India Revives Nalanda University, Embarks on Golden Age

The grand unveiling of the Nalanda University campus on Wednesday (June 27) marked a historic moment in India’s educational landscape. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the presence of numerous envoys from ASEAN and other countries, expressed his vision for a new era of prosperity and knowledge with the resurrection of this ancient institution.

Nalanda holds a special place in India’s history, representing a rich heritage that transcends borders and time. PM Modi emphasized the enduring nature of knowledge, stating, “Nalanda is more than just a name, it’s a mantra, an identity, a declaration that books might get destroyed by fire, but knowledge endures.”

The significance of Nalanda lies in its role as the epicenter of India’s educational identity, welcoming students from diverse backgrounds and nationalities. PM Modi highlighted the inclusive nature of the university, where admission was based on a quest for learning rather than nationality.

The event was graced by Union Minister for External Affairs S Jaishankar, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and Ambassadors from 17 partner countries. These countries, including ASEAN members and others like Australia, China, and Sri Lanka, have shown their support for the revival of Nalanda University through signed memorandums of understanding.

The modern incarnation of Nalanda University, established in 2010 through a legislative act by the Indian Parliament, symbolizes a reawakening of the ancient mahavihara. This renaissance was set in motion by a proposal endorsed by member countries at the 4th East Asia Summit in 2009, paving the way for a new chapter in educational excellence.

The journey to revive Nalanda University gained momentum in 2006 when former President of India, late A P J Abdul Kalam, proposed its re-establishment. By 2014, the first batch of students had enrolled, marking a significant milestone in the university’s rebirth.

The commitment to revive Nalanda University was met with enthusiasm by ASEAN member nations, who recognized its historical significance as a center of intellectual activity in Buddhist philosophy, mathematics, and medicine. The joint press statement from the 4th East Asia Summit highlighted the importance of preserving this ancient seat of learning for future generations.

Nalanda’s legacy as a hub of diverse intellectual pursuits, including Ayurveda, mathematics, and astronomy, continues to inspire scholars and students alike. The university’s library, with nine million palm-leaf manuscripts, was a treasure trove of knowledge that attracted scholars from across Asia.

The tragic demise of the ancient Nalanda at the hands of invaders in the 12th century did not deter India from rekindling its educational flame. The new campus, designed by renowned architect late BV Doshi, embodies eco-friendly principles and ancient Vaastu traditions, creating a sustainable and modern learning environment.

With state-of-the-art facilities and a focus on academic excellence, the new Nalanda University stands as a testament to India’s commitment to education and cultural preservation. As the university embarks on a new chapter, it carries the hopes and aspirations of a nation seeking to reclaim its intellectual heritage and shape a brighter future for generations to come.
