NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – The Metro Nashville Police Department has made public a distressing 911 call and body camera footage linked to a tragic officer-involved shooting in Bellevue on Thursday. Viewer and reader discretion is strongly advised.
The incident unfolded when a man dialed 911 to report that his brother, identified as 25-year-old Max Van Sickle, had assaulted him with a knife. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is currently probing the stabbing incident that culminated in the fatal shooting of Van Sickle. He emerged armed with a large knife as officers arrived at his apartment in the early hours of Thursday.
The victim, aged 27, urgently called 911 after allegedly being attacked by Van Sickle. He informed the dispatcher that his younger brother was in the midst of a manic episode and was wielding a knife.
“He has cut me and put it up to my neck. I had to stop him from stabbing me. I only cut a little bit on my hands from stopping that,” he recounted. “I took away ether or something, he’s like huffing something, I don’t know what it is.”
In a critical incident briefing by the department, the released bodycam footage showcases Officer Jonathan Scull’s perspective during the pursuit of the knife-wielding suspect.
As the trio of officers navigated through the complex, Van Sickle was sighted at the top of a staircase, still brandishing the knife. Despite orders to halt, he can be seen in the video descending the stairs towards the officers before Scull discharged fatal shots.
The other two officers were armed with tasers but were unable to deploy them due to Van Sickle’s sudden advancement and threat as he raced down the steps clutching the large knife in his left hand, as per MNPD spokesman Don Aaron.
Post the shooting, all three officers have been reassigned to “routine administrative duties” as the TBI investigation progresses and remains ongoing.
The TBI is scrutinising the officers’ conduct in this shooting, as per protocol. The MNPD will also be reviewing the officers’ actions to ensure they align with the department’s standards.
