Maurcalen Downs : “Teen suspect, victim in Ocilla shooting”

In Ocilla, Georgia, WALB has officially confirmed the identities of the 16-year-old suspect and the 14-year-old victim involved in the tragic shooting incident that took place on Monday.

The victim has been named as Maurcalen Downs, a 14-year-old who was rushed to the hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound. Unfortunately, Downs succumbed to his injuries upon arrival at the medical facility.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), Earl Wilcox III is the individual responsible for shooting Downs.

The mayor of Ocilla revealed to WALB that the two teenagers were actually close friends, making the incident even more heartbreaking for the community.

The tragic occurrence of teen violence has sparked widespread concern within the small city of Ocilla and beyond. In response, two local residents from Ocilla have taken it upon themselves to organise a community meeting on Thursday night. The aim of the meeting is to brainstorm and come up with effective strategies to combat gun violence in the area.

James Curtis, a native of Ocilla, emphasised the importance of community involvement in addressing the issue of gun violence. He stated, “One individual cannot tackle this battle alone, which is why I urge the entire community to step up and hold each other accountable in order to make our neighbourhood a safe haven once again.”

The community meeting is scheduled to take place at 6:30 p.m. at 116 East 4th Street in Ocilla. All concerned citizens are encouraged to attend and contribute to the discussion.

Currently, Wilcox is being held at a youth detention centre where he faces charges of murder in connection to the incident.
