BERLIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A Monroe County woman, Marshella Chidester, is set to stand trial for murder after allegedly crashing into a child’s birthday party while under the influence of alcohol.
Chidester faces charges of two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of operating under the influence of liquor causing death, and four counts of operating under the influence of liquor causing serious injury. The incident occurred at the Swan Boat Club in April, resulting in the tragic deaths of two young children and injuries to 11 other individuals.
The 66-year-old defendant lived adjacent to the boatyard in Berlin Township, near Lake Erie. Surveillance footage from Chidester’s residence captured her departure on the day of the crash, showing her unsteadily making her way to her car and eventually driving off towards the birthday party venue.
Prosecutors argued that the video evidence indicates Chidester was not fully in control of her actions before causing the fatal crash. Witnesses reported hearing the impact and discovering a scene of chaos at the Swan Boat Club, with victims trapped under the vehicle and others injured.
Tragically, two children, 8-year-old Alanah Phillips and her 5-year-old brother Zayn Phillips, lost their lives in the collision. Chidester’s blood alcohol level was found to be more than double the legal limit at the time of the incident, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
The defence team maintains that Chidester had only consumed a small amount of alcohol that day and argues that a medical emergency contributed to the crash. However, the trial is set to commence on July 12, with the defendant facing the possibility of a life sentence if convicted.
