Accident – Death – Obituary News : An Indiana police department has made public the body camera footage of a traffic stop that resulted in the fatal shooting of a 22-year-old Black man by an officer, sparking local protests in Fort Wayne.

The Fort Wayne Police Department shared a statement this week, alongside edited body camera footage of the incident that took place on a Saturday evening. According to the department, the officer felt compelled to fire his weapon due to the actions of the individuals inside the vehicle. Following the shooting, a gun was reportedly recovered from the car.

A spokesperson for the department was unavailable for immediate comment when contacted for an unedited copy of the incident. The man who tragically lost his life has been identified as Linzell Parhm, who was rushed to the hospital after the shooting and later pronounced dead.

In an effort to provide transparency and a clearer understanding of the events that transpired, the police department released the body camera footage. They emphasised the importance of gathering all the necessary facts before making any judgments.

The video footage, released on Tuesday, begins with Officer Mason Wills initiating a traffic stop and instructing the individuals inside the red vehicle to keep their hands on the dashboard. Despite initial compliance from the front passenger, the situation quickly escalates when he attempts to reach down. Officer Wills is seen pointing his gun at the man, issuing warnings not to move.

Backup was requested by Officer Wills as the situation intensified, and despite repeated warnings, the passenger made a fateful move that led to shots being fired. The body camera footage does not show a visible gun during the exchange but later reveals a firearm being retrieved from the front passenger seat.

The firearm was identified as a 7.62mm “Draco AK Pistol” by the police. The reason behind the initial traffic stop has not been disclosed by the authorities. Officer Wills has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with Fort Wayne Police policy.

The department confirmed that Parhm’s family has viewed the footage, and civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump has been retained by the family. The death of Parhm has prompted local protests, with demands for the release of the video footage and an ongoing investigation by the Indiana State Police.

Parhm, who served as a director at the Euell A. Wilson Center, a Christian centre dedicated to supporting youth and their families, has been remembered fondly by the community. Tributes have been shared on social media, with donations being solicited to support his family during this difficult time.

Described as someone who brought smiles to many faces and deeply cared for his family and community, Parhm’s untimely passing has left a void at the centre where he made a significant impact on the lives of those he encountered..
