Accident – Death – Obituary News :

At least one person tragically lost their life while climbing Mount Fuji just days before the official start of the climbing season, with three bodies discovered on the mountain, according to reports from the police and local media.

Among the deceased was Keita Kurakami, a professional rock climber and ambassador for Patagonia. Kurakami lost consciousness while ascending the mountain, Japan’s tallest peak, and was pronounced dead at a hospital, as reported by NHK.

The three bodies were found about three-quarters of the way up the 12,400-foot mountain, near its crater but in different locations. Authorities suspect that all three individuals were climbers who ascended the mountain separately.

Last year, seven deaths on Mount Fuji were reported, highlighting the dangers of the popular climbing destination.

The police in Shizuoka Prefecture initiated a search after a woman in Tokyo reported that her 53-year-old husband, who had set out to climb Mount Fuji, had lost contact. The man had sent a photo near the summit before losing contact, and he was later identified as one of the deceased climbers.

While the other two bodies are still being identified, they are believed to be a man in his 30s reported missing in December and a man in his 50s reported missing in January.

As the popularity of Mount Fuji has increased in recent years, concerns about overcrowding and unsafe climbing practices have grown among officials.

Official Climbing Season and Safety Measures

There are four trails leading to the summit of Mount Fuji, with the one in Yamanashi Prefecture opening on July 1 and the three in Shizuoka Prefecture opening on July 10, according to the mountain’s official climbing website.

Outside of the summer climbing window, Mount Fuji experiences harsh weather conditions, including strong wind gusts and snowstorms. Climbers can be at risk of falling due to these conditions, and facilities such as toilets and mountain huts are closed during the off-season.

Authorities have expressed concerns about climbers attempting to reach the summit without resting at the designated huts along the trails. Climbing without breaks can lead to altitude sickness and hypothermia, posing significant risks to climbers.

This climbing season, Yamanashi Prefecture has implemented new safety measures, including capping the daily number of hikers, requiring a fee for climbers, and installing a gate at the trailhead that will be closed during certain hours.

While the number of people summiting Mount Fuji has remained consistent over the past decade, the number of visitors to the start of the trails has increased significantly, raising concerns about safety and overcrowding on the mountain.

Authorities continue to stress the importance of following safety guidelines and being prepared for the challenges of climbing Mount Fuji to prevent further tragedies on the iconic peak.
