A Bronx resident, Jose Luis Lopez Genao, aged 32, admitted his involvement in the distribution of approximately one kilogram of fentanyl in the Worcester region. Genao entered a guilty plea for the charge of distribution of and possession with the intent to distribute fentanyl before U.S. District Court Judge Mark G. Mastroianni. The sentencing for Genao has been scheduled for September 23, 2024. He was apprehended and charged in December 2022.

According to the investigation, Genao and other individuals were identified as part of a network that received substantial shipments of fentanyl from overseas and then distributed it across Springfield and New England. On December 8, 2022, Genao travelled from New York to the Worcester area with the intention of delivering around one kilogram of fentanyl. Following the delivery to a government informant, Genao was promptly arrested.

The offence of distribution of and possession with the intent to distribute fentanyl carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, a minimum of three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $1 million. Sentencing decisions are made by a federal district court judge based on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and applicable statutes in criminal cases.

Collaborative Efforts for Prosecution

Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy, along with Jodi Cohen, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Division, announced the guilty plea. The prosecution received valuable support from Homeland Security Investigations in New England, Massachusetts State Police, as well as the Chicopee, West Springfield, and Easthampton Police Departments, and the Berkshire, Hampden, and Franklin County Sheriff’s Offices. Assistant U.S. Attorney Neil L. Desroches from the Springfield Branch Unit is handling the prosecution.

OCDETF focuses on identifying, disrupting, and dismantling the highest-level criminal organisations that pose a threat to the United States through a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency strategy.
