Accident – Death – Obituary News :
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office has announced that they will be holding a news conference on Thursday afternoon to provide updates on a recent officer-involved shooting that took place earlier this month in downtown South Bend.
The incident occurred on the morning of June 11, when officers responded to reports of a man wielding a knife in the area of the East Race and LaSalle Street. According to the caller, the man had allegedly threatened him with the knife and proceeded to stab his vehicle.
Upon encountering the suspect, who has been identified as 69-year-old John Charles Neiswender, one of the officers attempted to subdue him using a taser, which proved unsuccessful. Subsequently, another officer discharged his firearm, resulting in Neiswender being struck.
Following the shooting, Neiswender was transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the incident is being jointly conducted by the St. Joseph County and Mishawaka police departments.
