Accident – Death – Obituary News :

After more than four decades, the woman previously known as Jane “Seneca” Doe has finally been identified as JoAnn “Vicky” Smith. The Grundy County Coroner’s Office announced the breakthrough at a news conference, bringing closure to a long-standing cold case.

Smith, who was adopted and graduated from high school in the Cincinnati, Ohio area, will now be laid to rest next to her parents in South Carolina. Her family plans to hold a celebration of life in Cincinnati this weekend to honour her memory.

The case of Jane “Seneca” Doe remained unsolved for over 40 years until Coroner John Callahan reopened the investigation in 2017. With the help of Deputy Chief Corner Brandon Johnson, modern forensic science techniques were employed to give the victim her name back.

Johnson tirelessly searched through old case files, entered the victim’s information into multiple unidentified persons’ databases, and released artist-rendered images to the public in hopes of generating new leads. Despite hitting dead ends, the coroner’s office exhumed Doe’s remains in 2018 to leverage advancements in DNA technology.

Forensic Odontologist Denise C. Murmann determined Smith’s age to be 20 using advanced dental techniques. In 2019, her femur was sent to the University of North Texas for DNA analysis, resulting in a full female DNA profile being developed and entered into the national database for potential matches.

Partnering with the DNA Doe Project, Johnson explored genealogical DNA to identify Smith’s relatives. Close matches were found in her family tree from Selma, Alabama and Cincinnati, Ohio, as well as a first cousin from New York.

Smith’s body was discovered in a field in Seneca in 1976 by Henry Henderson, who initially mistook her for a deer. She was found with a green plastic bag, a half-empty bottle of wine, and a partial price tag inside her clothing. The victim had been shot in the head elsewhere and placed in the ditch less than 24 hours before her discovery.

Following her identification, Smith was buried in an unmarked grave at the Braceville – Gardner Cemetery in 1976. The closure of this case brings relief to the community and the family of JoAnn “Vicky” Smith.

Stay tuned for updates on this story as more details emerge from Thursday’s news conference.
