After nearly five decades, the remains of a young Black woman discovered near Seneca, Illinois have finally been identified as JoAnn “Vickie” Smith, an adopted woman from Ohio. The breakthrough in the case came through the use of advanced DNA and forensic techniques.
Discovery of Jane Seneca Doe
The remains, previously known as Jane Seneca Doe, were found in a ditch alongside US Highway 6 with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. The case remained unsolved for over 42 years until the Grundy County Coroner’s Office reopened the investigation in late 2017.
Identification Process
The initial DNA testing on the remains did not yield a name, but a team of expert genetic genealogists from the DNA Doe Project took on the challenge. Due to the underrepresentation of African-Americans in public databases, identifying Jane and John Does of African-American descent is often more challenging.
After more than four years of meticulous research and analysis, the team was able to construct a family tree that led to the discovery of Vickie Smith’s true identity. Being an adopted individual, most of her birth family members were unaware of her existence, making the identification process even more complex.
Family Reunion
Once Vickie Smith’s name was revealed, investigators were able to locate her original birth certificate and adoption records, shedding light on her past. The DNA Doe Project expressed their gratitude in being able to finally say her name and bring closure to the case.
“It is an honour for all of us to say her name – Vickie Smith – and to know she’s on her way home,” said Pam Lauritzen, a spokesperson for the DNA Doe Project.
The identification of JoAnn “Vickie” Smith after all these years serves as a testament to the dedication and perseverance of forensic experts and genealogists in solving cold cases and bringing closure to families.
