A tragic boating accident at Lake Gaston in North Carolina has claimed the life of a young Virginia Tech student. The victim has been identified as 19-year-old Jackson Fendley, who passed away on June 22, just two days before his birthday.
According to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, the accident occurred when the boat, carrying three individuals, collided with a dock on Friday night. While Fendley unfortunately succumbed to his injuries from the crash, the operator of the boat was treated for injuries at a hospital and later released. Thankfully, the third passenger on the boat escaped unharmed.
Jackson Fendley, originally from Harrisonburg, was pursuing a dual degree in neuroscience and music at Virginia Tech. Described as an avid outdoorsman, Fendley had a deep appreciation for nature and enjoyed activities such as hiking, skiing, and playing tennis. He was also a talented musician, known for his skills on the classical guitar and his ability to learn rock songs by ear.
In addition to his love for music and the outdoors, Fendley had a passion for animals and had a special connection with them. His obituary highlighted his caring nature and his ability to bring joy to those around him through his music and friendship.
As the investigation into the boating accident continues, authorities have mentioned that charges are pending. Meanwhile, a memorial service to honour Jackson Fendley’s life will be held on Sunday, June 30, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg.
