Authorities have finally identified a Jane Doe who was found dead in a remote area of Christmas, Florida, more than 20 years ago.
The discovery of the woman’s body on Taylor Creek Road in December 2003 left investigators puzzled for years until March 2024 when detectives were able to determine her identity. The victim has been identified as Holly Rose Garcia, aged 26.
Michael Vogen, the director of account management at Othram, Inc., a Texas-based company specializing in forensic evidence analysis, described the collaborative effort that led to the breakthrough in the case. Othram’s advanced DNA sequencing technology played a crucial role in generating a high-quality DNA profile for the victim, which was then handed over to the FBI for further investigation.
According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO), Holly Garcia, who was a mother and wife, was never reported missing. The circumstances surrounding her death have not yet been disclosed, but investigators believe she was killed four to six weeks before her remains were discovered. It is also suspected that she was not murdered at the location where she was found.
Det. Chelsey Koepsell of the OCSO cold case unit is now seeking information regarding Garcia’s then-husband, Miguel Angel Garcia-Rivera, whose current whereabouts are unknown. Anyone with information about Garcia-Rivera or Holly Garcia is urged to contact Crimeline or the OCSO cold case unit.
The cost of genome sequencing, which can range from £5,000 to £15,000 per case, has been a barrier to identifying many remains. However, in Holly Garcia’s case and several others from the OCSO, funding was provided with assistance from the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NAMUS). Othram frequently assists local law enforcement agencies in securing grant funding to support their identification efforts.
Michael Vogen emphasized the importance of bringing closure to families of missing persons through the identification of remains, stating that the work done by Othram is incredibly rewarding. He highlighted the impact of providing answers to families who may have otherwise never received closure.
