DENVER (AP) — A man has been arrested in connection to a fatal shooting in southern Colorado, where he allegedly killed a man by shooting him in the head and wounded two others, according to court documents.
Henry Corral, 44, was apprehended following an extensive search that involved him fleeing from a vehicle crash and attempting a carjacking. The incident took place at The Sunset Inn in Alamosa, a city of about 10,000 people located roughly 30 miles (50 kilometers) from the New Mexico border.
Authorities responded to a report of shots fired at the inn at about 2 a.m. Sunday, where they discovered the three victims. The wounded individuals were identified as Manuel Flores, a childhood friend of Corral’s wife who had recently been released from prison, and Gabriel Pina, a friend of Flores. Aurelio Pina, Gabriel’s father, was tragically killed in the shooting.
The arrest affidavit for Corral, released on Wednesday, revealed that Corral’s wife had been spending time with Manuel Flores, leading to the tragic events that unfolded. The document did not provide a clear motive for the shooting, although it mentioned that Corral and his wife were contemplating separation or divorce.
Represented by James Waldo from the public defender’s office, Corral appeared in court on Wednesday for the first time since his arrest. Judge Jason Kelly ordered that he remain in custody unless he can post a $5 million cash bond, citing the severity of the allegations against him and his criminal history.
Previous Charges and Criminal History
District Attorney Anne Kelly described the shootings as an execution and attempted executions, highlighting Corral’s troubled past. He had previously faced charges of first-degree murder in 2000 and 2016, pleading guilty to lesser charges in both instances. After serving time in prison for the 2016 case, Corral allegedly attempted to kill his girlfriend by strangling her upon his release.
Over the weekend, Corral fled the scene in a stolen car, manoeuvring past two irrigation ditches before ultimately crashing the vehicle in a field. Authorities suspect that he then set the car on fire in an effort to destroy evidence, including the weapon and a cellphone believed to be linked to the shooting.
The investigation into the fatal shooting in southern Colorado continues as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to the tragic incident.
