DENVER — A man has been arrested in connection to a fatal shooting in southern Colorado that resulted in the death of one man and the injury of two others. The incident, which occurred at The Sunset Inn in Alamosa, has left the community in shock.
Henry Corral, 44, was taken into custody following an intensive search that involved him fleeing from a vehicle crash and an attempted carjacking. The authorities found the three victims after responding to a report of shots fired at the inn in the early hours of Sunday morning.
According to an arrest affidavit released Wednesday, Corral’s wife had been spending time with Manuel Flores, a childhood friend who was recently released from prison and visiting from the Denver area. Flores was wounded in the shooting, along with his friend Gabriel Pina. Tragically, Gabriel Pina’s father, Aurelio Pina, lost his life in the incident.
The affidavit did not provide a motive for the shooting. However, it was mentioned that Corral and his wife had been discussing separating or divorcing, adding a possible angle of domestic dispute to the tragic events.
Corral, who was represented by James Waldo from the public defender’s office, appeared in court for the first time since his arrest. Judge Jason Kelly ordered that he be held in jail unless he can pay a $5 million cash bond, citing the severity of the allegations against him and his criminal history.
District Attorney Anne Kelly described the shootings as an execution and attempted executions. She revealed that Corral had previously been charged with first-degree murder in 2000 and 2016, but had pled guilty to lesser charges in both cases. After his release from prison in 2016, Kelly stated that Corral had attempted to kill his girlfriend by strangling her.
Over the weekend, Corral attempted to evade capture by fleeing in a stolen car in a rural area. In a dramatic escape, he reportedly jumped over two irrigation ditches before landing the car in a field. Authorities believe that he then set the car on fire in an attempt to destroy any evidence, such as the weapon used in the shooting and a cellphone.
The community of Alamosa and the wider southern Colorado region are left reeling from the tragic events that unfolded at The Sunset Inn. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and the authorities are working to bring justice to the victims and their families.
