A Franklin County man has been apprehended for reportedly pretending to be a Child Protective Services (CPS) worker in Sulphur Springs and Lamar County. The suspect, identified as 56-year-old Gerald Don Miller from Franklin County, Texas, is facing charges for deceptive practices.

Incidents in Lamar County and Sulphur Springs

The Lamar County Sheriff’s Office was alerted on June 18, 2024, about a Caucasian male posing as a CPS worker in order to gain access to a child. Miller allegedly informed a guardian that he needed to have a conversation with the child, successfully gaining entry. Detailed descriptions of the suspect and his vehicle were provided by the guardians and the victim.

Further investigations revealed a similar occurrence in Sulphur Springs, Texas, back in November 2023, with matching suspect and vehicle descriptions. On June 25, 2024, detectives positively identified Miller and obtained an arrest warrant. Subsequently, a search warrant was executed at Miller’s residence in Franklin County, where he was taken into custody.

Evidence and Modus Operandi

Items recovered from Miller’s vehicle corroborated the victim’s account in Lamar County, while additional evidence linked him to the Sulphur Springs incident. According to reports, Miller targeted victims under the care of grandparents and failed to produce legitimate credentials.

Public Safety Reminder

Law enforcement agencies and CPS are reminding the public that CPS workers are required to carry and display official credentials before engaging with individuals. The Lamar County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude for the joint efforts of detectives, CPS, the Sulphur Springs Police Department, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, and the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office.

If you have had any encounters with Miller where he claimed to be affiliated with CPS without presenting credentials, please contact your local law enforcement agency immediately. Miller is described as being 5’8″ tall, weighing around 240 pounds, with a combination of brown and white hair, a white mustache, and potentially carrying a red case bearing a Texas Department of Criminal Justice logo.

The investigation into these incidents is currently ongoing.
