Last week proved to be a tragic one for the residents of Laurel County, as the community was rocked by a series of devastating vehicle accidents that claimed the lives of three individuals. Accident Involving George E. Lewis

The first incident was reported by Laurel County Sheriff John Root, who revealed that George E. Lewis, a 57-year-old resident of East Bernstadt, lost his life in a tragic accident on KY 490. The incident took place approximately five miles north of London late in the evening on Monday, June 17.

According to preliminary investigations conducted by members of the London-Laurel County Crash Reconstruction Team, Lewis was struck by a northbound Honda Accord while he was walking as a pedestrian on the roadway. Despite being rushed to a local hospital by Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County, Lewis succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival.

At the scene of the accident, Shift Sergeant Travis Napier, Deputy Nate Bishop, and Deputy Joe Breeding from the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, along with personnel from the East Bernstadt Fire Department, London Laurel Rescue Squad, and the Laurel County Coroner’s Office, provided assistance.

Tragic Loss of Caleb Morgan

The following day, another fatal accident occurred on Nineva Road, approximately six miles east of London. Deputies Daniel Reed and Robert Reed, with the help of Crash Reconstructionist Deputy Mink, investigated the incident, which involved a four-wheeler carrying two male juvenile occupants.

Tragically, a 13-year-old boy named Caleb Morgan lost his life after the vehicle ran off the road, causing fatal injuries. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, Morgan was pronounced dead at the scene by the Laurel County Coroner’s Office. The other occupant of the four-wheeler sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Fatality on KY 638

The final fatal accident of the week occurred on KY 638, just east of London. Reports indicate that a Chevrolet Malibu pulled out of a parking lot and collided with a Ford pickup, resulting in the death of the Malibu’s driver, 64-year-old Edith Taylor. A 7-year-old passenger in Taylor’s vehicle sustained injuries but was not in a life-threatening condition.

Deputy Mink and London City Police Officer Hobie Daugherty led the investigation into the incident, with support from various agencies including the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County, Laurel County Volunteer Fire Department, London Laurel Rescue Squad, and the Laurel County Coroner’s Office.

The string of tragic accidents has left the community of Laurel County reeling, with residents coming together to support the families of the victims and raise awareness about the importance of road safety.
