According to Fernando Mateo, spokesperson for United Bodegas of America, the panic buttons provide a crucial lifeline for bodega owners and workers facing imminent danger. In the event of an emergency, a simple press of the button can trigger a text alert to multiple recipients, ensuring swift assistance.
The urgent need for increased safety measures was underscored by a series of violent incidents at bodegas in recent weeks. In one harrowing incident, a bodega clerk and mother of three sustained severe facial injuries in a sledgehammer attack in the Bronx.
Another bodega worker was stabbed multiple times in the chest after refusing to provide store credit to a stranger. These incidents highlight the vulnerability of bodega employees and the urgent need for enhanced security measures.
Councilmember Oswald Feliz of the 15th district is advocating for a significant investment in the panic button program, with a proposed budget of $15 million. Feliz asserts that this initiative sends a clear message that violence in bodegas will not be tolerated, and perpetrators will be held accountable.
While the implementation of panic buttons may incur costs, the potential benefits in terms of enhanced safety and crime prevention far outweigh the financial considerations.
