HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) — A Sussex County man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection to a fatal shooting that took place in October 2023 in Hopewell.

According to the Hopewell Police Department, 27-year-old Devon Lamont Mabry of Sussex County was arraigned on Wednesday, June 26, on the charges of first-degree murder and using a firearm while committing a felony in connection to the shooting death of 21-year-old Marciano Thorne of Chesterfield County.

Mabry, who was already being held at Riverside Regional Jail in Prince George County for an unrelated matter, is being held without bond.

On the evening of Thursday, October 3, 2023, at approximately 9:40 p.m., officers from the Hopewell Police Department responded to a distressing call in the 1100 block of High Avenue. Reports indicated that a man had been shot and was found unconscious at the scene.

The victim, identified as 21-year-old Marciano Thorne from Chesterfield County, was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds. He was promptly transported to Tri-Cities Hospital in Petersburg for medical treatment but tragically succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

Through meticulous investigative work, authorities determined that the fatal shooting incident occurred at the intersection of Winston Churchill Drive and Liberty Avenue in Hopewell.
