The Otero County Coroner has officially identified the body that was recovered from the Arkansas River near La Junta last week as Devlin Cambeul, the 19-year-old who went missing on June 12.
Less than a week after Cambeul disappeared in the river, a body was found 3.14 miles downstream from La Junta’s head gate. The discovery was announced by the Otero County Sheriff’s Office on June 18, with the body being recovered around 6:40 p.m.
Following previous reporting by The Gazette, Robert Fowler, the county’s coroner, confirmed that the clothing on the recovered body matched that of Cambeul.
The Otero County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Wednesday that positive identification of Cambeul was made based on two sets of dental records submitted to the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.
The official cause of death will be determined and released by the coroner within the next 12-14 weeks. Cambeul’s family has been notified of the identification.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time,” stated Sheriff Shawn Mobley in a social media update.
