June 26—A Michigan man with a history of prior arrests in Monongalia County found himself in police custody on Wednesday for drug possession.
During a routine patrol, Morgantown police officer C.J. Behm spotted a Chrysler minivan with Illinois registration that was suspected to be involved in a recent hit-and-run incident on June 24. Upon approaching the vehicle, Behm noticed a black male, later identified as Deante Bernard Hurt, 27, of Detroit, standing near the van.
As Behm approached the van, Hurt quickly got into the driver’s seat and attempted to drive away. However, he stopped the vehicle once Behm initiated a traffic stop.
Behm observed Hurt accessing various compartments of the vehicle, including the dash and ventilation controls. He also noticed plastic baggies protruding from Hurt’s right pocket and detected the smell of marijuana.
After removing Hurt from the vehicle and informing him of his Miranda Rights, Behm discovered a marijuana blunt in Hurt’s possession. A subsequent search of the van uncovered approximately 84.7 grams of a substance that tested positive for fentanyl hidden in the dashboard area.
Additionally, a magnetic, under-the-vehicle style storage box was found in the van by the police during the search.
Hurt was taken into custody for possession with the intent to deliver fentanyl and is currently being held at North Central Regional Jail on a bond of £50,000.
This is not the first time Hurt has faced drug-related charges in Monongalia County. In December 2023, he was charged with four counts of possession with intent and conspiracy to deliver controlled substances. In March, he faced two counts of possession with intent to deliver controlled substances and was released on a £100,000 bond in both cases. In April, he was arrested once again on drug charges and was released after posting a £50,000 bond.
