Accident – Death – Obituary News : A 16-year-old inmate at a juvenile correctional facility in Wisconsin is facing serious charges of homicide and murder following the death of a staff member he allegedly attacked. The tragic incident took place on Monday night at Lincoln Hills School in Irma, a facility operated by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections (DOC).
The staff member who tragically lost his life has been identified as 49-year-old Corey Proulx, a youth counselor at Lincoln Hills School. Proulx sustained critical injuries while trying to detain a juvenile inmate after the teen reportedly assaulted another staff member at the school, according to DOC. Despite efforts to save him, Proulx succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.
The teenager, named Javarius Hurd, has been charged with second-degree reckless homicide, felony murder-battery, and two counts of battery in connection with the incident. During a court appearance, a judge ruled that Hurd will be tried as an adult. His bond has been set at $100,000, and he has been instructed to have no contact with Lincoln Hills School staff or the victims’ family members. If convicted on all charges, Hurd could face up to 58 years in prison.
The teen allegedly harbored “built-up aggression” towards the initial victim, believing she was abusing her power and treating him unfairly. He purportedly planned to attack her and sought a cup of soap from another juvenile, which he threw at the staff member. Subsequently, he reportedly punched her repeatedly in the face and upper body before fleeing into a courtyard.
When Proulx attempted to detain the teen, Hurd allegedly struck him multiple times without provocation, delivering two powerful punches to his face. Proulx fell to the ground, hitting his head on the pavement and rendering him unconscious. Surveillance footage captured the entire incident, as outlined in the criminal complaint.
Proulx was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition but was declared brain-dead the following day. The female staff member involved in the altercation received medical treatment for her injuries and has since been discharged from the hospital. No other juvenile inmates were implicated in the incident, according to DOC.
In honour of Proulx’s memory, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers has ordered that U.S. and state flags be flown at half-staff until sunset on Thursday. Evers praised Proulx as a dedicated public servant known for his kindness and compassion in supporting the youth under his care. DOC Secretary Jared Hoy also paid tribute to Proulx, describing him as a dedicated professional and friend who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
Proulx’s fiancée and daughter remember him as an exceptional partner, father, son, and human being. Lincoln Hills School Superintendent Klint Trevino hailed Proulx as a dedicated and compassionate member of their team, always striving to positively impact the lives of the young individuals they serve.
State Representative Michael Schraa, who chairs the Assembly’s corrections committee, announced plans to conduct an informational hearing on conditions within the DOC in response to Proulx’s tragic death. He emphasized the importance of providing staff with the necessary tools to ensure their safety and that of incarcerated individuals.
