Accident – Death – Obituary News : A 16-year-old inmate at a juvenile correctional facility in Wisconsin is facing serious charges after a staff member he allegedly attacked passed away, according to court records. The incident took place at Lincoln Hills School in Irma, a facility operated by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections (DOC).
The staff member, identified as 49-year-old Corey Proulx, sustained critical injuries while trying to restrain a juvenile inmate who had reportedly assaulted another staff member at the school. Tragically, Proulx, a youth counselor at Lincoln Hills School, succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The teenage suspect, Javarius Hurd, has been charged with second-degree reckless homicide, felony murder-battery, and two counts of battery in relation to the incident. During a court appearance, a judge ruled that Hurd would be tried as an adult. His bond was set at $100,000 and he was prohibited from having any contact with Lincoln Hills School staff or the victims’ family members. If convicted on all charges, Hurd could face up to 58 years in prison.
According to a criminal complaint, Hurd allegedly harbored “built-up aggression” towards the initial victim, whom he believed was abusing her authority and treating him unfairly. He purportedly planned to attack her and threw a cup of soap at her before physically assaulting her. When Proulx intervened to restrain him, Hurd allegedly struck the staff member multiple times and then turned his violence towards Proulx, punching him in the face with full force.
Surveillance footage captured the altercation, showing Proulx falling to the ground and hitting his head on the pavement. He was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition but was later declared brain-dead. The female staff member involved in the incident was also hospitalised but has since been discharged.
Following Proulx’s tragic passing, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers ordered that U.S. and state flags be flown at half-staff in his honour until sunset the following day. Evers praised Proulx as a dedicated public servant who exemplified kindness and compassion in his work with youth at the facility. DOC Secretary Jared Hoy described Proulx as a dedicated professional and friend who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of his job.
Proulx’s loved ones remembered him as an exceptional partner, father, and human being. Lincoln Hills School Superintendent Klint Trevino lauded Proulx’s dedication and compassion towards the young individuals under his care.
State Representative Michael Schraa, chair of the Assembly’s corrections committee, expressed his condolences over Proulx’s death and announced plans to hold an informational hearing on the conditions within the DOC. Schraa emphasised the importance of providing staff with the necessary tools to ensure their safety and that of incarcerated individuals..
