A 16-year-old inmate at a juvenile correctional facility in Wisconsin is facing homicide and murder charges after a staff member he allegedly attacked died, according to court records.
The tragic incident took place on Monday night at Lincoln Hills School in Irma, a juvenile correctional facility operated by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections (DOC).
The staff member who tragically lost his life has been identified as 49-year-old Corey Proulx, a youth counselor at Lincoln Hills School. He sustained critical injuries while trying to detain a juvenile inmate following an alleged attack on another staff member at the facility, the DOC reported.
Proulx sadly passed away on Tuesday from the injuries he sustained during the altercation.
Charges and Court Appearance
The 16-year-old suspect, identified as Javarius Hurd, was charged on Wednesday with second-degree reckless homicide, felony murder-battery, and two counts of battery in connection with the incident, as per a criminal complaint. During a court appearance on Wednesday, a judge ruled that Hurd will be charged as an adult.
Hurd’s bond has been set at $100,000, and he has been ordered to have no contact with Lincoln Hills School staff or the family members of the victims. If convicted on all charges, he could face up to 58 years in prison.
ABC News has reached out to Hurd’s attorney for comment on the case.
Alleged Motive and Details of the Attack
The teenager reportedly told investigators that he harbored “built-up aggression” towards the initial victim, a female staff member, because he believed she was “abusing their power and treating him unfairly.” He allegedly planned to attack her and asked another juvenile for a cup of soap, which he threw at her, according to the complaint.
Following the initial attack on the female staff member, Hurd is accused of repeatedly punching another unidentified staff member in her face and upper body before fleeing into a courtyard. It was during the pursuit by Proulx that Hurd allegedly struck him multiple times unprovoked, delivering two full-force punches to his face, causing Proulx to fall and strike his head on the pavement, as captured by surveillance footage, the complaint outlined.
Proulx was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition and was declared brain-dead by the Lincoln County coroner on Tuesday afternoon, as stated in the criminal complaint.
Reaction and Mourning
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers has ordered that U.S. and state flags fly at half-staff until sunset Thursday in honor of Proulx, acknowledging his dedication and compassion in working with youth at the correctional facility.
DOC Secretary Jared Hoy described Proulx as a dedicated professional, colleague, and friend, highlighting the sacrifices that correctional staff make in their commitment to rehabilitation and public safety. Proulx’s fiancée and daughter remembered him as an “amazing partner, father, son, and human being,” as noted by the DOC.
Lincoln Hills School Superintendent Klint Trevino commended Proulx for his dedication and compassion in making a positive impact on the lives of the young individuals at the facility.
State Representative Michael Schraa, chair of the Assembly’s corrections committee, announced plans to conduct an informational hearing on conditions within the DOC following Proulx’s tragic death, emphasizing the need for staff to have the necessary tools to ensure their safety and that of incarcerated individuals.
No other juvenile inmates were involved in the incident, according to the DOC.
